Mr. Richard Tyndall

Mr. Richard Tyndall, a native of Clinton, North Carolina, is currently the Band Director and Instrumental Music Teacher at South Columbus High School in Tabor City, North Carolina where he is enjoying his nineteenth year of teaching. Due to the influence of some amazing educators coupled with a natural aptitude for music, he knew he wanted to become a band director as early as middle school. He attended college at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro where he earned a Bachelor of Music degree in Music Education and Music Performance. While a student at UNC-Greensboro, Mr. Tyndall performed with the nationally acclaimed UNCG Wind Ensemble, Symphony Orchestra, Jazz Band and Trombone Ensemble. In addition to his ensemble experience, he has performed as a soloist, clinician, and private teacher on numerous occasions. He has performed with the Fayetteville Symphonic Band, Fayetteville Symphony Orchestra, Carolina Philharmonia and Second Time Around Big Band.

Mr. Tyndall is also the recipient of numerous awards and scholarships. In 2000 he attended the North Carolina Governor’s School with a concentration in Instrumental Music. He is also the recipient of the North Carolina Teaching Fellows Scholarship and the Elizabeth von Nappon Music Scholarship. He is a member of several professional organizations including NAfME, SEDBA and Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia Fraternity of America. Over the years Mr. Tyndall’s students have participated in MPA, Solo & Ensemble and various honors bands. In 2009, Mr. Tyndall was selected to be the clinician for the PSRC Honors Band. He was the conductor of the Sampson County Schools Middle School All-County Band in April 2019. Mr. Tyndall was also named the 2021 - 2022 Teacher of the Year at Littlefield Middle School. In 2024 he was the middle school band clinic for Celebrate the Arts. 

During most summers Mr. Tyndall works to train assessors to score/evaluate NBPTS portfolios. He has also worked as staff at several summer music camps and high school marching bands. Mr. Tyndall resides in Lumberton, North Carolina with his wife, Serena, and son, Stephen.
